What Makes a Physical Installation "Reactive" Rather Than Just Interactive

A Distinction Worth Making

"Interactive" and "reactive" get used interchangeably in briefs, but they describe genuinely different technical approaches with different costs, capabilities and failure modes. Understanding the distinction helps clients specify what they actually want rather than discovering the gap once a quote or a prototype arrives.

An interactive installation responds to a deliberate action — pressing a button, standing on a marked spot, scanning a code. A reactive installation responds continuously to the state of the physical world around it — tracking where people are, how fast they're moving, how many are present — without requiring anyone to trigger anything explicitly.

Interactive: Discrete Triggers

Interactive systems respond to defined inputs at defined moments. This is simpler to build reliably and easier to test, because the possible inputs are known in advance.

  • Button or touchscreen presses triggering predetermined content
  • Marker or QR code scanning activating specific responses
  • Single presence detection starting an experience when someone enters a zone
  • Menu-driven navigation where the system waits for the next deliberate choice

Reactive: Continuous State-Reading

Reactive systems maintain an ongoing model of the physical environment and respond to changes in that model without waiting for a discrete trigger. Our experiential technology development builds these continuous sensing systems for installations where natural, unprompted engagement matters.

  • Multi-person tracking maintaining individual identities across a space
  • Movement and gesture analysis interpreting continuous motion rather than discrete poses
  • Environmental adaptation adjusting behaviour to crowd density or ambient conditions
  • Predictive response anticipating trajectory rather than reacting after the fact

Why the Difference Matters for Budget and Timeline

Reactive systems cost more and take longer to build because the engineering has to handle a far wider range of unplanned states — what happens with three people instead of one, what happens when someone moves unpredictably, what happens at the edges of sensor range. Interactive systems can be tested against a known set of inputs; reactive systems need testing against open-ended real-world behaviour, informed by our sensing and tracking expertise.

Choosing the Right Approach

Not every brief needs reactive complexity. A product configurator triggered by a button press achieves its objective perfectly well as an interactive system. A crowd-responsive lighting installation genuinely needs continuous reactive sensing. Working through our partnership process, we help agencies match technical approach to actual objective rather than defaulting to the more impressive-sounding option.
