Venue Wi-Fi and Connectivity: Planning Interactive Activations to Work Offline

Never Trust the Venue Network

Exhibition and event venues often have shared Wi-Fi that slows or drops when thousands of devices connect. An activation that depends on it can stall exactly when crowds arrive.

Options for Staying Connected

Plan for the connection you need, and ask what the venue can promise in writing. We consider this early on our event installations.

  • Offline-first design — the installation runs without a connection
  • Dedicated wired line — a reserved connection from the venue
  • Mobile data backup — a separate cellular router as a spare
  • Local network — devices talk to each other without the internet
  • Sync later — results upload when the connection returns

Visitor Phones Too

Experiences that rely on visitors' own phones, such as WebAR, need signal for them as well. Keep file sizes small and ask whether the venue offers good mobile coverage.

Ask the Right Questions

Before the event, ask the venue about bandwidth, how many devices share it, whether it blocks certain traffic and what support exists on the day.
