The Engine Is a Business Decision
Clients rarely care which engine sits behind an experience, but the choice affects cost, devices, visual quality and who can maintain it later. It deserves a proper conversation at the start of a project.
A Plain Comparison
These are general tendencies, and every project needs checking. We use all three across our AR, VR and WebAR work.
- Unity — wide device support, strong for mobile, AR and VR, and a large developer pool
- Unreal Engine — very high visual quality, popular for cinematic and high-end real-time work
- Browser-based 3D — no install, instant sharing, but tighter limits on model size and effects
- Native apps — best performance and device features, with store approval to manage
- Hybrid approaches — a web front end with heavier engine content behind it

Questions That Decide It
Where will people use it, on which devices, and how fast must it load? Will the client update it themselves? How realistic must it look? Licensing terms change over time, so check current terms for the engine and any plugins before you commit.
A simple experience does not need the heaviest engine, and a premium installation may justify one.
Ask for the Reasoning
A good supplier explains why they recommend a platform and what the trade-offs are. Agencies can talk it through with us via our partnership programme before a brief is finalised.
