Projecting onto Water, Fog and Unusual Surfaces: What Is Possible

Spectacle with Conditions

Water curtains, fog screens and mist can make images appear to float in air. They look wonderful in the right setting, and underwhelming in the wrong one.

What to Expect

Each surface has its own character. We assess these options for our spectacle installations.

  • Water screens — images on falling water, best in darkness
  • Fog and mist — volumetric images, sensitive to wind
  • Glass and scrim — see-through effects with layered depth
  • Buildings and trees — textured surfaces that change the image
  • Smoke and haze — beams of light rather than clear pictures

Plan for Conditions

Wind, ambient light and viewing angles all matter. Test outdoors at the actual time of day, and be ready to adapt content to the surface.

Mind Safety and Regulations

Water, electricity and fog need careful handling, and venues may restrict machines. This is general information, not safety advice. Agencies planning spectacles can talk to us via our partnership programme.
