Sensors Decide What Is Possible
An installation can only respond to what it can sense. Understanding the options helps you brief realistically, and avoids asking for something the hardware cannot detect reliably.
The Common Types
This is a simplified overview of sensors we use across our installation work.
- Passive infrared — detects warm movement, simple and cheap for presence
- Ultrasonic and time-of-flight — measure distance to people or objects
- Depth cameras and LiDAR — track bodies and positions in a space
- Capacitive touch — senses a hand on a surface or through glass
- Load cells and pressure pads — detect weight, steps or objects placed

Matching Sensor to Situation
Sunlight confuses some infrared sensors, crowds confuse presence detectors and reflective surfaces confuse distance sensors. Outdoor and public settings need more rugged choices, while a calm indoor display can use simpler ones.
Often the best result comes from combining two simple sensors rather than relying on one clever one.
Prototype Before You Commit
Test any sensor in the actual space with realistic crowds, lighting and distances. Agencies can ask us to run a short sensor trial through our partnership programme before the concept is locked in.
